Nail health — how to properly care for them, what to eat for strong nails, how to treat damaged nails and basic manicure tips.
🥗 Proper nutrition for strong nails
• Protein: Nails are made of keratin, so protein is key. Eat meat, fish, eggs, legumes and nuts.
• Biotin (vitamin B7): Helps strengthen nails and prevent breakage. Found in eggs, nuts, whole grains and bananas.
• Zinc: Helps with nail growth and skin health. Found in meat, shellfish, seeds and nuts.
• Iron: A deficiency can cause brittle nails. Rich sources are red meat, spinach, legumes.
• Vitamin E: Protects nails from damage. Found in nuts, seeds, vegetable oils.
• Omega-3 fatty acids: Keep nails moist and flexible. Found in flaxseed, nuts, and fish.
🧴 Nail care
1. Regular trimming
– Trim nails straight or slightly rounded to prevent ingrown nails.
2. Moisturizing
– Regularly lubricate nails and cuticles with oils (e.g. argan, almond) or cream.
3. Avoiding excessive moisture
– Prolonged soaking weakens nails, so dry your hands after washing.
4. Using protective gloves
– Always wear gloves when working with water, detergent, or chemicals.
5. Do not bite your nails or remove cuticles by tearing
– This can damage the nail bed and cause inflammation.
🏥 Treatment of damaged nails
• Cracking / peeling nails:
– Moisturizing with oils and nail cream.
– If necessary, use nail strengtheners (e.g. keratin products).
• Fungal infections:
– A visit to a dermatologist is necessary. He usually prescribes antifungal medications.
– Maintain nail hygiene and dryness.
• Ingrown nails:
– Regularly trim them so that they do not cut into the skin.
– If there is severe inflammation, seek help from a doctor or a podiatrist.
• Injuries (bumps, fractures):
– Protect the damaged nail plate and let it grow.
– If there is pain or bleeding, see a doctor.
💅 Manicure – basic tips
1. Nail preparation
– Thoroughly wash your hands and nails.
– Remove old nail polish with a quality remover (non-acetone is gentler).
2. Trimming and filing
– Shape your nails by filing them gently.
– Not too thinly so that the nail does not weaken.
3. Cuticles
– Do not forcefully remove, rather gently push it back with a cuticle stick.
– Moisturize and condition regularly.
4. Nail Polish
– Apply a base coat to protect the nail.
– Then apply 2 coats of nail polish and a top coat for shine and durability.
– Allow your nails to “breathe” without polish.
5. Regular Maintenance
– Repeat the manicure every 1-2 weeks, depending on nail growth.
💡 Additional Tips
• Drink enough water to hydrate your skin and nails.
• Avoid excessive use of aggressive chemicals on your nails.
• If you notice any unusual changes (color, thickness, pain), see a doctor.
