Autumn Hair Loss
28.10.2025
Autumn hair loss is a very common and usually seasonal phenomenon that many people notice.
In most cases, it is a natural process, but it is characterized by the fact that hair falls out in larger quantities than usual.
Why does autumn hair loss occur?
The main reason is related to the natural hair growth cycle (growth phase, transition phase and resting/shedding phase)
Natural hair growth cycle (Telogen phase):
- Hair often enters a resting phase (called telogen phase) in the summer due to stronger sunlight and heat.
- After a few months, usually in the fall, this hair falls out to make room for new and stronger hair to grow. This is a renewal process that is often compared to the leaves falling off trees.
Summer stress for hair:
In the summer, hair is exposed to UV radiation, chlorine and salt water, which can damage hair follicles and weaken the hair structure.
This damage only manifests itself as increased hair loss in the fall.
Changes in vitamin D and light levels:
With the decrease in sunlight in the fall, the body also reduces its production of vitamin D, which is essential for the health and growth of hair follicles.
Stress and lifestyle changes:
Autumn often brings the end of holidays, the start of a new school/work year and increased stress, which can further trigger or worsen hair loss (telogen effluvium).
How to alleviate autumn hair loss?
If hair loss is only seasonal, it is usually temporary and lasts a few weeks. However, you can take measures to support the growth of new hair and reduce hair loss:
Diet and Nutritional Supplements
Hair health starts from the inside. Ensure sufficient intake of the following nutrients:
· Biotin (Vitamin B7): Essential for the formation of keratin, the main protein of hair. (Sources: eggs, nuts, whole grains).
· Iron and Zinc: Important for hair growth. (Sources: red meat, spinach, lentils, pumpkin seeds). If you suspect a deficiency, consult your doctor about a blood test.
· Vitamin D: Especially important in the fall. (Sources: salmon, fortified milk or dietary supplements).
· Protein: Hair is made of protein, so it is essential for hair strength.
· Vitamins C and E: Antioxidants that protect hair follicles.
Proper scalp and hair care
· Gentle care: Use gentle shampoos (without aggressive sulfates) and conditioners that strengthen hair and stimulate growth.
· Scalp massage: Regular gentle scalp massage (with fingertips or a natural bristle brush) stimulates blood circulation and nutrition of hair follicles.
· Anti-hair loss products: Use specialized lotions, serums or ampoules that contain active ingredients (e.g. Minoxidil or Redensyl) to stimulate hair growth and strength.
· Avoid stress: During the hair loss period, avoid tight hairstyles (pups, buns), strong rubbing with a towel and aggressive combing of wet hair.
Reducing harmful effects
· Limit heat: Avoid heat treatments (hair dryers, irons, curling irons) as much as possible or always use heat protection.
· Manage stress: Since stress is often a trigger, make sure you get enough sleep, exercise in the fresh air and practice relaxation techniques (yoga, meditation).
If hair loss lasts longer than a month and a half to two months, is very intense, or is accompanied by itching, scalp pain or other skin changes, consult a general practitioner or dermatologist. The cause may be deeper (hormonal disorders, thyroid problems, iron deficiency or certain medications).
