Diet for pancreatitis

2 min reading time

To maintain a healthy pancreas and support its function, it is important to eat a diet that reduces strain on the organ, supports digestion, and prevents inflammation.

If you have problems with your pancreas (e.g. pancreatitis), it is important to consult a doctor.

Foods that support pancreatic health

Fruits and vegetables:

  • Rich in antioxidants, vitamins, and fiber, which helps prevent inflammation and maintain healthy digestion.
  • Recommended vegetables: spinach, broccoli, kale, peppers, carrots, zucchini.
  • Recommended fruits: berries (blueberries, raspberries), cherries, apples, grapes, citrus fruits (lemons, oranges).

Whole grains:

  • Contain fiber, which supports healthy digestion. Oatmeal, brown rice, quinoa, whole grain bread and pasta.

Lean meat and fish:

  • A source of protein that does not burden the pancreas. Skinless chicken, turkey, fish high in omega-3 (salmon, sardines, trout).

Healthy fats:

Fats that are easy to digest and beneficial. Avocado, olive oil, nuts (almonds, walnuts), seeds (flax, chia).

Probiotics:

  • Beneficial for intestinal flora and digestion. Yogurt with live cultures, kefir, sauerkraut, kimchi.

Herbs and spices:

  • Some have anti-inflammatory properties and support digestion. Turmeric, ginger, garlic.

Foods to avoid

  • Fatty foods: fried foods, fatty meats, cream, butter.
  • Processed foods: fast food, salty snacks, industrially prepared meals.
  • Sugar: sweets, sugary drinks, pastries, processed sugars put a strain on the pancreas and can contribute to the development of diabetes.
  • Alcohol: harmful to the pancreas, especially when inflamed.
  • Carbonated drinks: irritate the digestive tract and increase the risk of digestive problems.

Additional tips for a healthy pancreas

  • Eat smaller and more frequent meals: Large amounts of food at once put a strain on the pancreas.
  • Drink enough water: Staying hydrated supports digestion.
  • Avoid overeating: Maintain moderation in meals.
  • Maintain a healthy weight: Obesity increases the risk of pancreatic problems.
  • Limit stress: Chronic stress can negatively affect digestion and pancreatic function.
