How to properly care for your hair and scalp

Proper hair and scalp care is key to a healthy and shiny appearance.

Since hair health starts at the scalp, it is important to pay attention to both. Basic steps and tips:

Scalp Care

  • The basis of healthy hair: A healthy scalp is the foundation for healthy hair. Make sure it is clean, moisturized and well-circulated.
  • Scalp Scrub: It is recommended to use a scalp scrub once a week, which removes impurities and promotes blood circulation.
  • Toners and Oils: Use tonics, waters or special oils (e.g. olive, jojoba, coconut, almond) that nourish and moisturize the scalp. You can leave the oils on overnight and wash them off in the morning.
  • Massage: Gentle scalp massage with your fingertips (or a special massage brush) stimulates blood circulation and the health of the hair follicles.

Proper Hair Washing

  • Shampoo Selection: Choose a shampoo that suits your hair type and scalp (e.g. for dry, oily, sensitive, color-treated scalp). Mild shampoos, free of sulfates and silicones (if you have a sensitive scalp) are recommended.
  • Water Temperature: Use lukewarm water. Hot water can irritate the scalp, accelerate greasiness and damage the hair. Finally, you can rinse your hair with cold water to close the hair cuticle and increase shine.
  • Double Wash:

Always wash your hair twice:

  1. The first wash removes dirt and product residue. The shampoo may not lather.
  2. The second wash thoroughly cleanses the scalp. Use a smaller amount of shampoo and gently wash the scalp (do not rub the hair lengthwise).
  • Rinsing: The shampoo and foam should be thoroughly rinsed out – the rinsing should last at least three times longer than the application. Residue can irritate the scalp and weigh down the hair.
  • Frequency: There is no universal rule. The general recommendation is once or twice a week, but it depends on your hair type (oily hair more often, dry and curly hair less often) and lifestyle.

Care After wash

  • Conditioner: After shampooing, apply a conditioner that softens the hair, makes it easier to comb and closes the hair cuticle. Apply to the lengths and ends of the hair, avoiding the scalp.
  • Mask: Once a week, treat your hair to a nourishing mask for deep care and restoration of damaged strands.
  • Products and oils: Use a leave-in conditioner or hair oil (for the ends) that moisturize, protect and prevent split ends.

Drying and Combing

  • Combing: Comb your hair before washing to reduce breakage when wet. Gently comb wet hair with a wide-tooth comb or a special brush only when it is slightly dry.
  • Towel Drying: Gently pat your hair dry with a towel (preferably microfiber) – never rub, as this damages the hair.
  • Heat Protection: Always apply heat protection products if you use a blow dryer, flat iron or curling iron. Do not blow dry your hair with too much heat.

Other Tips

  • Regular Trimming: Regular trimming (every 6-8 weeks) eliminates split ends and contributes to a healthier appearance of hair.
  • Heat Avoidance: Limit the use of flat irons, curling irons and hot air.
  • Gentle Handling: Avoid over-tightening your hair in buns or braids, as this causes breakage and hair loss. Use soft elastics without metal parts.
  • Nutrition and Hydration: Ensure a balanced diet (vitamins B and E, zinc, biotin) and drink plenty of fluids.

The key is to choose products and a routine that are tailored to your hair and scalp type. When in doubt, consult your personal stylist.
