Foods High in Antioxidants
23.07.2026
Foods high in antioxidants help protect cells from oxidative stress.
They are found mostly in colorful fruits, vegetables, nuts, spices, and some beverages.
The best sources include:
• Blueberries – very rich in anthocyanins, which give them their blue-purple color.
• Blackberries and Raspberries – high in polyphenols and vitamin C.
• Strawberries – an excellent source of vitamin C and flavonoids.
• Pomegranate – contains powerful antioxidants such as punicalagins.
• Red grapes – contains resveratrol and other polyphenols.
• Dark chocolate (at least 70–85% cocoa) – rich in flavanols.
• Walnuts and pecans – contain polyphenols and healthy fats.
• Spinach, kale, and red cabbage – rich in vitamins C, E, and carotenoids.
• Beetroot – contains betalain pigment.
• Tomatoes – contain lycopene, especially after heat treatment.
• Green tea – rich in catechins.
• Turmeric – contains curcumin, is even better absorbed together with black pepper.
Foods with the greatest antioxidant power
If we look at the antioxidant content per food quantity, the most prominent ones are:
1. Berries (blueberries, blackberries, chokeberry).
2. Dark chocolate with a high cocoa content.
3. Pecans and walnuts.
4. Spices such as turmeric, cinnamon, cloves and oregano (used in small quantities, but very rich in antioxidants).
5. Green tea.
How to include them in your diet
• Add a handful of blueberries or raspberries to yogurt or oatmeal for breakfast.
• Eat at least 2–3 types of colorful vegetables every day.
• Choose a handful of walnuts as a snack.
• Instead of dessert, eat 20–30 g of good-quality dark chocolate occasionally.
• Drink a cup of green tea throughout the day.
The greatest health benefits come from a varied diet with plenty of fruits, vegetables, legumes, whole grains and nuts, rather than focusing on a single “superfood”.
