Junk food is food that is low in nutrients, such as vitamins, minerals, and fiber, and high in ingredients that can be harmful to your health if you eat too much of it. It is usually high in calories, saturated fat, trans fat, sugar, and/or salt.
It is okay to have an occasional snack, but it is important to eat a balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and protein for the most part.
Examples of junk food:
Fried foods – such as French fries, fried chicken, and donuts.
Processed foods – such as chips, crackers, and instant noodles.
Sweets and baked goods – such as chocolate bars, candies, cakes, and cookies.
Carbonated and sweetened beverages – soda, energy drinks and fruit juices with added sugar.
Fast food – burgers, pizzas and kebabs offered by fast food restaurants.
Why are junk foods harmful?
- Obesity: Due to their high calorie content, they can cause overweight.
- Cardiovascular disease: Saturated and trans fats can increase bad cholesterol levels.
- Type 2 diabetes: Foods high in sugar can cause blood sugar fluctuations.
- Nutrient deficiencies: Frequent consumption of junk food can lead to deficiencies in important nutrients in the body.
