The most common reasons for fatigue and exhaustion
27.04.2025
Fatigue and exhaustion are very common symptoms that can have many different causes — from completely harmless to more serious health problems. Here are the most common reasons:
🧠 1. Lack of sleep
• Not getting enough sleep or poor sleep quality leads to chronic fatigue.
• This is often related to shift work, stress, or using screens before bed.
🍞 2. Poor diet
• Not enough calories, too much sugar, or processed foods can lead to a lack of energy.
• Low intake of iron, B12, vitamin D, and magnesium is a common cause of physical exhaustion.
🏃♀️ 3. Lack of exercise
• Ironically, but true — not enough physical activity leads to even more fatigue.
• Regular exercise increases energy and improves sleep.
😟 4. Stress, anxiety, and depression
• Mental health has a big impact on physical well-being.
• Chronic stress or depression can be very draining on the body and mind.
💉 5. Health Problems
• Common culprits:
○ Anemia (low hemoglobin)
○ Thyroid problems (hypothyroidism)
○ Diabetes
○ Chronic fatigue syndrome
○ Sleep disorders (e.g. apnea)
○ Infections (e.g. mononucleosis, post-viral fatigue)
☕ 6. Too much caffeine or alcohol
• Caffeine in excessive amounts can disrupt sleep, despite the short-term “boost”.
• Alcohol worsens sleep quality and causes dehydration.
⏰ 7. Irregular daily routine
• Irregular hours of sleep, wake-up, meals and activities affect the circadian rhythm.
If it is a long-term fatigue that lasts more than a few weeks and does not go away with more rest, it is a good idea to see a doctor to check basic laboratory results and possible other conditions.
