How cold affects hair

2 min reading time

Cold weather and cold can affect your hair in several ways, often causing dryness and damage.

The main effects of cold and winter on hair are:

· Dryness and brittleness:

o Cold and wind outside and dry, heated air indoors (due to central heating) dry out the hair and scalp severely.

o Constant large temperature differences when moving from indoors to outdoors and vice versa further stress the hair and deprive it of moisture.

o Due to dryness, hair becomes thin, dry, brittle and more susceptible to breakage and split ends.

· Scalp and natural oils:

o Low temperatures can reduce the secretion of sebum (natural fat) on the scalp, which further leaves the hair without a protective layer.

o The scalp can become dry, itchy and start to peel.

· Static electricity:

o Dry air (especially in heated rooms) and clothing made of synthetic materials (hats, scarves) can cause static electricity, which makes hair unruly, sticking out and the cuticle of the hair easier to open.

· Damage to wet hair:

o If you go out in the cold with wet or damp hair, the hair is especially vulnerable and brittle, which can cause faster and greater damage and breakage.

💡 How to protect your hair from the cold:

· Moisturizing and care: Use moisturizing shampoos and conditioners. Once a week, treat yourself to a deep nourishing mask with natural oils (argan, coconut, olive oil).

· Don’t go out in the cold with wet hair: Always make sure your hair is completely dry before going out in the cold.

· Reduce heat: When drying with a dryer, use medium or low heat and use heat protection if you use a flat iron or curling iron.

· Protection: In cold weather, wear a hat or scarf to protect your hair from direct cold and wind.

· Ends: Regularly trimming the ends prevents breakage and further splitting of dry hair.
