Eating Right at Work

Eating right at work is key to overcoming those “office biological traps” we talked about.
To stay sharp and prevent the accumulation of visceral fat, you need to forget about the classic snack machines and focus on stable energy levels.
The “Hormone Sequence” Rule
It’s not just calories that matter, but the order in which food enters your body. This directly affects insulin.
- Fiber first: If you bring your lunch to the office, eat a salad or cooked vegetables first. The fiber will coat your intestines and slow down the absorption of sugars from subsequent courses.
- Then protein and fat: Meat, fish, eggs, tofu or nuts. These will fill you up.
- Carbs last: Eat rice, potatoes or fruit only at the end of the meal. This will prevent that famous “afternoon energy drop” (brain fog).
“Smart Snacking” Strategy
Most office snacks (cookies, fruit yogurts) cause a rapid rise and then a steep drop in sugar, which triggers hunger and stress.
- Replace fruit with nuts: Fruit on an empty stomach while sitting quickly raises insulin. Better choices are almonds, walnuts or pumpkin seeds, which contain magnesium (for calm nerves).
- Dark chocolate (85% +): If you need something sweet, a piece of dark chocolate lowers cortisol and improves blood circulation to the brain.
“Hydration without the caffeine loop”
The brain often mistakes thirst for hunger.
- Water with a pinch of salt: When you are stressed, your adrenal glands use up minerals at an accelerated rate. Add a pinch of unrefined salt and lemon juice to your water – this will hydrate your cells better than plain water.
- Coffee time: As we mentioned before, drink coffee only after your first meal, never on an empty stomach in the middle of a stressful project.
The “Conscious Break” Technique
Eating in front of a screen is one of the biggest pitfalls.
- Problem: When we eat while working, the brain does not register satiety (the hormone leptin does not come into play). The result? You will be hungry again in an hour.
- Solution: Eat away from your desk for at least 15 minutes, without your phone. This switches the nervous system from the “fight” state to the “digest” state (parasympathetic), which prevents fat from being stored in the belly.
Suggested “Office Menu” for optimal performance:
Time | Meal / Drink | Why? |
Morning (at the office) | Green tea or water with lemon. | Hydration and antioxidants without an adrenaline rush. |
Snack / Lunch | Chicken/chickpea salad + olive oil. | Fiber and protein for stable focus. |
15:00 (Crisis) | A handful of almonds and mineral water | Magnesium to calm afternoon stress. |
Organizational tip: If you are organizing a lecture, you can suggest that the company provide a bowl of nuts and fresh herbal water in the kitchen instead of a basket of cookies.
It’s a small change with a huge impact on the health of the team.
