Anti-aging tricks for healthy, thick hair

3 min reading time

Maintaining thick, shiny hair after the age of 30 or 40 requires a combination of proper care, nutrition, and a few “tricks” that prevent thinning of the hair shaft.

As you age, oil production slows down, and your hair becomes more brittle.

Scalp Care (Scalp Care is the New Skin Care)

Your scalp is an extension of your face. If your scalp is healthy, your hair will be stronger.

• Scalp Massage: Take 5 minutes every day to massage your scalp with your fingertips. This stimulates blood circulation and delivers nutrients to the follicles.

• Scalp Exfoliation: Use a gentle exfoliation once a week to remove dead skin cells and product residue that could be choking your hair follicles.

• Density Serums: Use serums with peptides, caffeine, or plant-based stem cells to strengthen the roots.

Washing and moisturizing

Older hair is more porous and drier, so it needs a gentler approach.

• Washing less often: Don’t wash your hair every day, as this strips away natural oils. 1–2 times a week is ideal.

• Cold rinse: Rinse your hair with slightly cooler water at the end of washing. This closes the hair cuticle, which increases shine and locks in moisture.

• Avoid sulfates: Use shampoos without harsh foaming agents that dry out hair too much.

Nutrition and supplements

Hair is an “unimportant” tissue for the body, so it receives nutrients last. If it is deficient in the diet, the hair will suffer first.

• Collagen and Biotin: Collagen helps with skin and hair elasticity, while biotin promotes the formation of keratin.

• Iron and Zinc: Low iron levels are one of the most common reasons for hair loss in women.

• Omega-3 fatty acids: They keep hair shiny from the inside out. You can find them in walnuts, flaxseeds, and oily fish.

Mechanical protection (small tricks with a big impact)

• Silk pillowcase: Cotton rubs against hair and causes breakage. Silk or satin allows hair to slide, which prevents knots and split ends.

• No-sweat: Instead of tight ponytails (which cause traction alopecia), opt for low ponytails or soft clips.

• Pat dry: Never rub your hair with a towel. Gently squeeze the water out of your hair.

Optical tricks for more volume

If your hair is already a little thin, you can use these tricks:

• Zigzag parting: A straight parting emphasizes thinning hair. A zigzag parting creates instant volume at the roots.

• Scalp Shader: Use a dedicated shader in your hair color to fill in areas where your scalp is too visible.

• Dry Shampoo on Fresh Hair: Don’t wait until your hair is oily. Apply a little dry shampoo to clean hair right after blow-drying – this will give it structure and lift.

Important: If you notice sudden and severe hair loss, it’s always a good idea to have your thyroid and hormone levels checked by your doctor.
