The right combination of food during the holidays
27.12.2024
During holidays such as Christmas and New Year, food is often abundant and heavier, so it is important to ensure the right combination and moderation. This way we will enjoy the delicacies without feeling overeating or digestive problems.
With the right combination of food and moderation, you will be able to enjoy the holidays without feeling heavy or guilty. Some guidelines for a balanced holiday diet.
Start meals with fresh vegetables
- Vegetables contain fiber, which helps with digestion and prevents the feeling of overeating. Example: Fresh salads (arugula, spinach, beetroot, carrots). Vegetable snacks (cucumbers, carrots) with yogurt dressing.
Choose proteins wisely
- Choose: Lean meat, fish or vegetarian sources of protein. Instead of fatty pork, choose turkey, chicken, or fish (e.g. salmon, cod). Home-grown legumes (lentils, chickpeas) are an excellent choice for side dishes or soups. Limit: Excessively fatty meats (sausages, fried foods).
Add healthy side dishes
- Alternatives to classic side dishes: Instead of fried potatoes, choose baked sweet potatoes, whole grain risotto or couscous. Instead of a white French salad, you can make a lighter version with cottage cheese or yogurt.
Be careful with sweets
- Choose smaller portions: Instead of larger pieces of potica or cake, treat yourself to a smaller slice.
- Healthy substitute: Dried fruits, nuts, dark chocolate (over 70% cocoa).
Don’t forget to hydrate
- Drink between meals: Plain water, unsweetened tea or mineral water with lemon.
- Limit alcohol: If you drink wine, sparkling wine or liqueurs, combine them with water to reduce dehydration.
Maintain a regular eating rhythm
- Don’t starve yourself before a festive dinner! Eat smaller, balanced meals throughout the day to avoid overeating in the evening.
- Regular meals: For example, a light breakfast (Greek yogurt with nuts) and lunch (vegetable soup or salad).
After a meal – get moving!
- A walk after a meal will speed up digestion and reduce the feeling of heaviness.
