Summertime Hair Repair

3 min reading time

Summer is a wonderful time of year, but the sun, chlorine, and salt water can seriously damage your hair. Luckily, there are many ways to repair damaged hair and keep it healthy and shiny all season long.

Understanding Summer Hair Damage

Before we get started on your hair repair, it’s important to understand how summer elements affect your hair:

· UV rays: The sun can dry out your hair, weaken its structure, and cause color to fade.

· Chlorine: Chemicals in swimming pools can strip your hair of its natural oils, making it brittle and giving blonde hair a greenish tinge.

· Saltwater: Seawater dries out your hair, leaving it dull and lifeless.

· Humidity: High humidity can cause your hair to frizz and become unmanageable.

Key steps for effective hair restoration in the summer:

Gentle cleansing and hydration

· Use mild shampoo and conditioner: Choose products that are specifically formulated for dry and damaged hair. These usually contain moisturizing ingredients such as hyaluronic acid, glycerin, argan oil or shea butter.

· Reduce the frequency of washing: Excessive washing of hair can further dry out the scalp and hair. Try washing your hair 1-2x per week.

· Rinse hair with cold water: After washing and conditioning, rinse your hair with lukewarm or cold water to close the hair cuticle and lock in moisture.

Intensive treatments and masks

· Weekly hair masks: Use a nourishing hair mask at least once a week. Look for masks that contain proteins (to restore the hair structure) and moisturizing ingredients (for deep hydration). Leave the mask on for at least 10-20 minutes, or even longer if the hair is very damaged.

· Hair oils: Natural oils like coconut oil, argan oil, jojoba oil, or almond oil are great for deep conditioning. Apply a small amount of oil to dry or damp hair, focusing on the ends, and leave it in overnight or a few hours before washing.

· Leave-in treatments: Use a leave-in conditioner or spray after each wash to provide extra protection and moisture throughout the day.

Damage protection

· Sun protection: Use a UV-blocking hair spray before going out in the sun. Also consider wearing a hat or scarf.

· Chlorine and salt water protection: Before swimming, wet your hair with clean water and apply a leave-in conditioner or a small amount of oil. This will create a barrier that will reduce the absorption of chlorine and salt. After swimming, rinse your hair with clean water as soon as possible and use a mild shampoo.

· Reduce the use of heat tools: Flat irons, curling irons and blow dryers can further damage already weakened hair. When possible, let your hair air dry, and if you use heat tools, always use a heat protectant spray.

Proper nutrition and hydration

· Water: Drink enough water, as hydration also affects the health of your hair.

· Balanced diet: A diet rich in vitamins (A, C, E, biotin) and minerals (zinc, iron) is key to strong and healthy hair. Include plenty of fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds and protein.

Regularly trim your ends

· Remove split ends: Damaged ends are a sign that your hair is weakened. Regular trimming (every 6-8 weeks) will prevent further splitting and make your hair healthier.

By following these tips consistently, you can restore your hair and keep it beautiful, shiny and healthy. Remember that patience is key – hair needs time to regenerate.
