How to Reduce Bloating with Diet

2 min reading time

Bloating is a very common and uncomfortable problem that is often associated with poor digestion, eating too quickly, or sensitivity to certain foods.

🌬️ Tips for Reducing Bloating

Be careful with air (aerophagia)

The most common cause of bloating is swallowed air (aerophagia).

• Eat and drink slowly: Chew your food thoroughly and eat slowly. When we eat quickly, we swallow large amounts of air.

• Avoid carbonated drinks: The bubbles in carbonated drinks (soda, mineral water) are air that is released in the digestive tract.

• Don’t chew gum or smoke: We also swallow air when chewing and smoking.

Moderate some fiber

While fiber is key, some types can cause gas, especially if eaten too much or suddenly.

Cut back on cruciferous vegetables (temporarily): Vegetables like broccoli, cauliflower, Brussels sprouts, and cabbage contain raffinose, a gas-producing sugar. Try cutting back on them temporarily.

• Soak legumes: Beans and lentils are strong gas-producing vegetables. It helps to soak them overnight and discard the soaking water, then rinse and cook them thoroughly.

Use natural carminatives (gas-fighting herbs)

Some spices and herbs promote gas release and soothe the digestive tract.

• Ginger tea: Ginger soothes the digestive tract and speeds up stomach emptying.

• Peppermint: Peppermint tea can relax the muscles in the digestive tract.

• Fennel: Chew fennel seeds after meals or make fennel tea – it’s great for gas.

Watch out for some sugar alcohols

Artificial sweeteners are often used in chewing gum and diet drinks, but they can be difficult to digest.

• Sugar alcohols are found in gluten-free and “sugar-free” products. Because they’re not well absorbed by the body, they ferment in the gut and cause gas.

Eat probiotics

• Fermented foods: Regularly consume kefir or plain yogurt, which contain live cultures (probiotics) to balance your gut.

• Digestive enzymes: Enzymes found in pineapple and papaya help your body break down protein and can help with digestion.
