Physical activity at the workplace
14.10.2024

Physical activity at the workplace is an increasingly important topic, as many employees face the negative consequences of prolonged sitting and insufficient movement. Modern workplaces, especially those in an office environment, often involve a lot of sitting in front of a computer, which can lead to various health problems such as back pain, obesity, poor posture and reduced productivity. The introduction of physical activity in the workplace is beneficial for the health of employees and for general well-being and work efficiency.
Physical activity in the workplace brings many benefits for the health and well-being of employees, while also improving work efficiency, productivity and job satisfaction. Creating an environment that encourages movement allows employees to feel better, which leads to better business results and greater employee satisfaction.
The benefits of physical activity at work
- Improved physical health: Regular physical activity helps prevent diseases such as cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure and joint problems. In addition, it helps to reduce back and neck pain that is common when sitting for long periods of time.
- Mental health and stress reduction: Physical activity increases the level of endorphins, which act as natural pain relievers and improve mood. Employees who are physically active manage stress and anxiety more easily and are more satisfied with their work.
- Increased productivity: Physical activity can increase cognitive functions such as concentration, attention and creativity. Employees who are more physically active tend to be more focused, more efficient at solving problems and complete tasks faster.
- Improved energy and stamina: Regular exercise increases energy levels by improving blood circulation and reducing fatigue. Employees who incorporate physical activity into their workday tend to have more energy to perform tasks throughout their working hours.
- Reduced absenteeism: The health benefits of physical activity can reduce the number of days employees are absent due to illness, as physically active people get sick less often.
- Better team dynamics: Group physical activities, such as organized exercises, sports games or relaxing walks, can improve relations between employees, encourage cooperation and build a sense of community.
Ways to incorporate physical activity into the workplace
- Short stretches to stretch: Taking short stretches to stretch every 30-60 minutes can help reduce muscle tension, improve circulation and prevent discomfort associated with prolonged sitting. It’s a simple yet effective practice that employees can incorporate into their workday.
- Walking or standing: Encouraging employees to use standing desks or walk between meetings can significantly reduce sitting time and increase daily activity. Some companies also offer conveyor belts next to their desks, allowing employees to walk while working.
- Exercise at work: Some companies organize group exercise classes or short exercise sessions (eg yoga, pilates, aerobics) during lunch breaks or after the end of the work day. This is a great way to encourage movement and release tension.
- Encouraging walking or cycling to work: Companies can encourage their employees to walk or cycle to work by providing safe bike racks or rewarding those who use sustainable modes of transport. This encourages more daily activity, including outside working hours.
- Use the stairs: Encouraging employees to use the stairs instead of elevators is another simple but effective method of increasing daily physical activity.
- Active breaks: Instead of the usual desk meetings, companies can introduce “walking meetings” where employees talk and solve problems while walking. This encourages both movement and creative thinking.
- Physical activity in free time: Many companies offer benefits such as free or subsidized memberships to fitness centers, or organize sports teams where employees participate in sports events (e.g. soccer, basketball, tennis).
- Relaxation zones: Some companies also have relaxation zones with exercise equipment such as yoga mats, balance balls or even table tennis tables where employees can relax and exercise while working.
Challenges and overcoming obstacles
- Lack of time: One of the main excuses for not participating in physical activities at work is lack of time. The solution may be in short, effective exercises that last only a few minutes, or the integration of physical activities into daily tasks (eg walking between meetings).
- Lack of motivation: Some employees may not feel the need or motivation for physical activity. Companies can overcome this barrier by introducing incentives such as bonuses, prizes or competitions that motivate employees to become more actively involved.
- Space and equipment: Lack of space or exercise equipment can be a challenge, but many activities such as stretching, walking or using the stairs are free and do not require special equipment.
