Food that makes us sleepy

2 min reading time

Foods that make us feel sleepy, heavy, and lower our energy levels tend to be high in carbohydrates and fats, which can affect our digestion and hormones.

Some types of foods cause sleepiness because they affect blood sugar levels or stimulate the release of the hormone serotonin, which is converted into melatonin, a hormone that regulates sleep.

Some types of foods that can make us feel sleepy and heavy include:

Carbohydrates (white bread, pasta, potatoes): They quickly increase blood sugar levels, causing a quick energy spike, followed by fatigue and drowsiness.

Sugary foods (sweets, sugary drinks): They cause a quick rise and fall in blood sugar, which can affect energy and increase fatigue.

Fatty foods (fried foods, fatty meats): They are slowly digested, which can slow down digestion and cause a feeling of heaviness and drowsiness.

Dairy products (cheese, whole milk): They contain the amino acid tryptophan, which stimulates the production of serotonin and melatonin.

After a heavy meal, the body directs more energy into the digestive process, which can reduce overall energy levels and cause a feeling of fatigue.

For more energy, it is recommended to eat a balanced diet with plenty of fiber, protein, and complex carbohydrates, and eat smaller meals throughout the day.
