What to drink in the morning before coffee

2 min reading time

If you reach for your coffee first thing in the morning, you’re not alone—but there are some better steps you can take to improve your energy, digestion, and overall well-being throughout the day.

Water (Most Important)

After a night of being slightly dehydrated, your body is a bit dehydrated. A glass of water right after you wake up:

• helps kickstart your metabolism

• improves your concentration

• aids digestion

👉 This is the most underrated “morning drink.”

Warm water with lemon

Adding lemon can:

• boost your digestion

• provide some vitamin C

• help you feel “awake”

👉It’s not a miracle, but it’s a good way to start your day.

Herbal tea (e.g. mint or ginger)

If you want something warm before coffee:

• mint soothes the stomach

• ginger helps digestion and is slightly invigorating

Water with a pinch of salt (electrolytes)

If you wake up tired in the morning or exercise:

• helps with hydration

• can improve energy

A small snack (if you are sensitive to coffee)

Coffee on an empty stomach can:

• increase acidity

• cause nervousness or shakiness

👉A small snack (e.g. banana or nuts) can alleviate this.

Why not coffee right away?

Coffee right after waking up can:

• disrupt the natural hormone cortisol

• increase the stress response

• reduce the long-term “boost” of energy

👉 It is better to wait 30–60 minutes after waking up.

Summary (best routine)

1. Water

2. (optional) lemon or tea

3. Wait a bit

4. Then coffee
