Foods you should eat more often if you want to live to a ripe old age

If you want to give your body the best chance of reaching the “100 club”, you should follow the example of the so-called Blue Zones (areas in the world where people live the longest).

The common point of their diet is not exotic powders, but simple, whole foods that reduce inflammation and protect DNA.

List of foods that should be included in the menu at least a few times a week:

Legumes (Beans, lentils, chickpeas)

This is the absolute No. 1 food in all Blue Zones.

  • Why: They are full of fiber and plant protein. Fiber feeds good bacteria in the gut, which strengthens the immune system and reduces the risk of colon cancer.
  • Longevity: Studies show that every additional 20 g of legumes per day reduces the risk of death by 7-8%.

Cruciferous vegetables (Broccoli, cauliflower, kale, cabbage)

These vegetables contain a compound called sulforaphane.

  • Why: Sulforaphane activates enzymes in the liver that neutralize toxins and protect cells from cancer. They’re also rich in vitamins C and K, which are essential for bone and vascular health.

Nuts (especially walnuts)

A handful of nuts a day is like natural insurance for your heart.

  • Why: Walnuts are unique because they contain high concentrations of Omega-3 fatty acids (ALA), which reduce inflammation in the brain and preserve cognitive function (memory) well into old age.

Berries (Blueberries, blackberries, raspberries)

This is where the power of antioxidants called anthocyanins comes in.

  • Why: Antioxidants repair damage to your DNA that occurs due to aging and stress. Blueberries have been shown to be linked to better brain function in older adults.

Fermented foods (Sauerkraut, kefir, kimchi)

A healthy gut is the key to a long life, as 80% of your immune system is located there.

  • Why: Probiotics in fermented foods reduce systemic inflammation. It is no coincidence that cultures with a long tradition of consuming fermented foods (e.g. Japan, the Caucasus) have many centenarians.

Green tea and turmeric

  • Green tea: Contains EGCG (epigallocatechin gallate), which protects the heart and reduces the risk of Alzheimer’s disease.
  • Turmeric: Its active ingredient curcumin is one of the most powerful natural anti-inflammatory agents. Aging is basically a process of chronic inflammation, and turmeric slows this down.

Don’t forget the “80% Rule” (Hara Hachi Bu)

In Okinawa (Japan), people say “Hara hachi bu” before every meal, which means: “Eat until you are 80% full.” This prevents overloading the metabolism and reduces oxidative stress, which is key to longevity.
