Autumn hair loss

Fall hair loss is often a seasonal phenomenon that many people notice. In summer, hair is exposed to the sun, UV radiation, salt and chlorine, which can affect its structure and health. In the fall, however, hair often falls out more, which can be a cause for concern.

Fall hair loss is usually temporary and part of the natural cycle, but with proper care and nutrition, you can reduce the amount of hair loss and maintain stronger hair.

  1. Why does fall hair fall out?
  • Seasonal changes: In autumn, exposure to sunlight decreases, which can affect the natural hair growth cycle. In the summer, hair grows faster due to the increased amount of light, while in the fall, the growth cycle slows down and more hair goes into the resting phase (telogen phase), which leads to hair loss.
  • Stress: Changes in the weather, stress at the start of a new work or school year, and changes in lifestyle can affect the condition of the hair.
  • Overexposure to the sun in the summer: The sun can damage hair in the summer, dry out the scalp and weaken the hair follicles, which can lead to more hair loss come fall.

  1. How to prevent or reduce autumn hair loss?
  • Food rich in vitamins and minerals: It is important to eat food that strengthens the hair. The focus should be on foods that contain:

Biotin: Found in eggs, nuts and bananas, it is important for hair health.

Iron: Helps prevent hair loss, found in red meat, spinach and lentils.

Zinc: Found in pumpkin seeds, nuts and meat, it contributes to the renewal of hair cells.

Vitamin D: In autumn, less sun means less vitamin D, which is important for hair growth. Ensure adequate intake with salmon, eggs or nutritional supplements.

  • Proper scalp care: Use gentle shampoos, avoid aggressive chemicals and excessive use of styling products. Massaging the scalp with oils such as coconut or castor oil can stimulate circulation and improve the health of the hair follicles.
  • Avoiding heat treatments: Reduce the use of hair dryers, irons and other hot tools in autumn, as these damage the already delicate hair.
  • Using natural hair masks: Use hair masks made from natural ingredients that help strengthen hair and prevent hair loss. An example of a mask is a mask made of honey and coconut oil, which moisturizes and nourishes the hair.
  • Reduce stress: Introduce stress management techniques such as meditation, yoga or regular physical activity, as stress can increase hair loss.

  1. When to seek professional help?
  • Excessive shedding: If you notice that your hair is falling out in larger amounts than usual, and this continues for several months, consult a professional. Excessive hair loss can be a sign of other health problems, such as hormonal imbalances (eg thyroid problems) or iron deficiency.
